Highlights van The Analytical Challenge: Pavel Matousek - Deep Raman Spectroscopy of Turbid Media

IRDG - Infrarood & Raman Discussiegroep: 11.15-12.00 uur

 Pavel Matousek

A number of analytical applications require non-invasive, chemically specific characterisation of deep areas of diffusely scattering media such as diagnosis of subsurface cancers and quality control of pharmaceutical products. The presentation will discuss emerging techniques in Raman spectroscopy substantially extending the applicable depths of Raman spectroscopy in such samples. Several examples of their applications in biomedical, security and pharmaceutical areas will be given and recent advances in the field discussed.

Pavel Matousek

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Pavel Matousek has worked at the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire for nearly 20 years. He pioneered ultrafast fluorescence rejection from Raman spectra using optical Kerr gating and non-invasive Raman methods for deep probing of turbid media based on Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS). Pavel has published over 160 peer reviewed scientific papers and filed 10 patents. He is the recipient of Charles Mann Award 2009 for Achievements in the Field of Applied Raman Spectroscopy awarded by the international Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) and shares the 2002 & 2006 Meggers Awards from the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS). Pavel is a founding director of Cobalt, an STFC Fellow and a Visiting Professor at University College London. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Applied Spectroscopy. Recently he acted as the Chair of the Meggers Award Selection Committee of the SAS and as the International Delegate of the Governing Board of the SAS.
